East to West, FL’s I-4 Spreads Out →

Contractors are upgrading Interstate 4 in central Florida, section-by-section, reshaping the future of the heavily-traveled highway. The 20 or so projects planned, completed or in progress along its 140-mi. (224 km) length carry a total price tag of approximately $1 billion in construction costs. Funding comes partly from an economic stimulus program pushed through the legislature by Gov. Jeb Bush. The general task given an array of contractors is to widen Interstate 4 to six lanes in some places, to eight lanes in other sections and to prepare some stretches of the corridor for an ultimate width of 10 lanes. $162M Skyscraper Grows Roots on Mobile Waterfront →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Workers currently are laying the groundwork for the tallest skyscraper in Alabama and one of the tallest buildings in the Southeast. The Retirement Systems of Alabama’s (RSA) $162-million, 800-ft. (243.8 m) tall office building is scheduled to be complete in late 2005, according to Ron Blount, project manager. After years of experience in the earthmoving industry, Barrie Foster, owner of BF Foster Company Inc., found he could save time and money on his jobs by using a tractor and pull-type scraper combination. Foster owns two 9400 four-wheel drive John Deere tractors and four 1812C carry-all pull-type scrapers, along with several other pieces of earthmoving equipment. Department of Transportation engineers decided Cut 4 on a U.S. 221 four-laning project in western North Carolina wasn’t as laid back as they would like, so a Vecellio & Grogan (V&G) construction crew redesigned how it would slice away the mountainside. Looking at a map of North Carolina, the 13-mile (21 km) stretch of NC 87 angling southeast from Interstate 95 would not seem to warrant four-laning. At its southern end, the roadway reaches nothing more than the outskirts of the small town of Tar Heel. The destination hardly seems worth $20.5 million that the NC Department of Transportation is spending on upgrading the highway.
