Caterpillar improved fourth quarter customer demand for on-highway truck engines will reduce the number of temporary manufacturing shutdowns and employee layoffs at the company’s engine and fuel systems facilities previously announced on Oct. 14, 2002. The impacted facilities are in Mossville and Pontiac, IL, and Jefferson and Thomasville, GA. The revised schedules mean that some employees will not face layoffs at all, while the majority will experience shorter periods of layoff. From Construction Equipment Guide... Collector George Schaaf of Frankfort, IL, recently held an auction to reduce the inventory of his truck and tractor museum on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 to 21. On Friday, Schaaf’s huge petroleum collection sold and on Saturday, his antique tractors and many unusual and rare construction trucks went under the gavel. McAninch Uses Cat Equipment to Relocate U.S. 59 in Missouri →

From Construction Equipment Guide... On March 15, 2002, the McAninch Corporation was the successful low bidder on a highway relocation project on U.S. 59 in Holt County, MO. The $4.3-million project calls for constructing a new 2-mi. (3.2 km.) section of roadway with a 24-ft. (7.3 m) wide pavement and stabilized shoulders. When completed the highway will avoid a winding roadway, along with two narrow and decaying bridges. Tilcon Barges Six TR-100 Terex Haul Trucks Upriver →

Most people have heard of “Moscow on the Hudson,” but how many people have heard of “Terex on the Hudson?” Such was the case recently when Tilcon New York Inc., Clinton Point Quarry, a division of the Oldcastle Materials Group, purchased six new Terex TR-100 haul trucks, which were delivered by barge from Newark, NJ —three trucks on one barge and three on the other. The machines were manufactured in Scotland and then delivered completely assembled to a port in Newark. Annually, Tilcon’s Clinton Point Quarry produces millions of tons of crushed stone and manufactured sand for use in the downstate New York markets. Interestingly, the quarry, which opened in 1880 and purchased by Tilcon in 1997, once was known as New York Broken Stone and occupies the former site of the estate of Gov.  Click for more...

Lots of it. “Just about all the million yards is weathered rock,” said Brad Heavner, alluding to the volume of shale and earth to be moved on the project that will become the Northlite Shopping Center. In Kansas City, the highway passes by a future rail-truck hub that will provide a critical trade connection with Mexico. Five mi. (8 km) to the north lies the Grandview Triangle, the aging intersection of U.S. 71, I-435 and I-470 highways. Total value of the transaction is SEK 120 M. The vehicles will be used throughout Serbia in the build-up of the Serbian road network. Soon, getting that annual truck chassis inspection should be less of a chore, as Alban Engine Power Systems brings its vehicle inspection system (VIS) right to your door. Six months ago, Baltimore based Alban, purchased a machine from Vehicle Inspection Systems Ltd., an Australia-based company whose North American headquarters is in Louisville, KY. This system has been available Down Under for several years, but according to Alban, this marks the first time a Caterpillar dealer will offer this service to customers in North America. Rea’s I-77 Design-Build Project Unsnarls Traffic in Charlotte →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Interstate 77 that runs through Charlotte, NC, has had major traffic problems for years. Currently, a $71-million highway design-build project is underway to help improve the congestion situation. By widening this 8-mi. (13 km) portion of the highway, the I-77 project will solve many of the troubles this busy interstate encounters on a day-to-day basis. The I-77 project is managed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the prime contractor for the project is Rea Construction Company, one of the leading highway, paving and bridge contractors in the Southeast.  Click for more...
