From Construction Equipment Guide... FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) Navistar International plans to add 200 engineering jobs to its design and engineering center in Fort Wayne, Ind., by the end of the year. A spokesman for the Warrenville, Ill.-based company said it is hiring engineers for the International Truck and Engine center to be sure that its diesel engines meet federal environmental requirements set to take effect in 2010. Navistar also announced plans in June to create an alliance with Peoria, Ill.-based Caterpillar to work on technology development, engines and construction vehicles.  Click for more...


One-Lane Bridge Collapses Under Overweight Truck →

From Construction Equipment Guide... RICHMOND, Va. (AP) A steel deck-truss bridge collapsed June 4, injuring a man who was driving an overweight concrete truck over it, transportation officials said. Work was under way to replace the 158-ft. (48 m), one-lane bridge over Walker Creek in Giles County, which had been deemed structurally deficient under federal guidelines, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Heidi Coy. The designation, which applies to 10 percent of the state’s 20,000 bridges, means a bridge must be monitored, inspected and maintained but does not imply that it is unsafe or likely to collapse.  Click for more...
