In February 2022, H&K Group Inc. (H&K) took delivery of two new locomotives for its Birdsboro Quarry rail loadout operation. Located in Berks County, Pa., Birdsboro Quarry has a rich mining history dating back to the 1920s. H&K acquired the quarry and commenced operations in 2000. In recent years, builders and contractors have all heard about efforts to replace some of the aggregate used in concrete with crumbled used tires. Now, however, scientists appear to have succeeded in producing more durable concrete in which all the material's aggregate has been replaced with tire particles, according to a recent report by New Atlas, a science and technology online news site. Wood's CRW of Carlisle, Pa., recently sold its first Atlas material handler to Jack's Auto Inc. of Mt. Morris, Pa. "Atlas material handlers are a new product line for CRW," said Chris Palmer, president. "It was a natural extension of the combination of our excavating equipment division and our crane and lifting division. They are long reach material handling machines that are critical to keep up and running daily for end users, which include the scrap and recycling industry."
