From Construction Equipment Guide... A major reconstruction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is currently under way in Somerset, PA. The $94.3-million project, funded entirely by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, involves the total reconstruction of a 13-mi. (20.9 km) long section of the original turnpike built in 1940. From Construction Equipment Guide... Mud. Lots of it. The exposed dirt at the Nissan Manufacturing Plant in Canton, MS, was thoroughly soaked by intense rainfalls in May and June 2003. Tom Elmore, president of Eutaw Construction, looked out at the site before him and saw machines sitting idle. The site was completely underwater. Articulated trucks trudging through deep mud is one thing but through a lake is another. Only one of Elmore’s five 35-ton (31.8 t) articulated trucks was working.  Click for more...

Vocational truck operators recently tested the newest Kenworth trucks equipped with the latest options and features, including the extended day cab, at “Kenworth: The Right Choice,” a hands-on, educational program sponsored by Kenworth Truck Company. This event, designed to show the features of the Kenworth lineup of working trucks, attracted more than 130 customers at two locations: Kenworth’s Chillicothe, OH, manufacturing plant and Caterpillar’s 6,000-acre Tinaja Hills proving grounds facility near Tucson, AZ. Terex Wins Contract to Supply Israel With Trucks →

Terex Corporation announced Jan. 7 that its joint venture, American Truck Company (ATC), of which Terex is a two-thirds owner, has been awarded and entered into a contract with the U.S. Army Tank-armaments and Automotive Command (TACOM) to supply the Ministry of Defense of Israel (IMOD) with 302 medium tactical trucks and associated logistics support. From Construction Equipment Guide... PERRYVILLE, MO (AP) A new concrete roundabout in southeast Missouri is frustrating truckers, who claim it is a highway hazard and a waste of tax dollars. The roundabout opened 12 days ago at U.S. 61 and Main Street in Perryville. Truckers claim it is difficult to navigate large rigs around the oval-shaped interchange. Tires of large trucks routinely scrape the roundabout’s inner curb. One truck even got stuck on the curb, highway officials said.  Click for more...

Deciding to spend its money on machines from a well-established dealer, Bruce Albea contacted Cowin Equipment, which opened its doors to Georgia customers one year ago. In preparation for moving an extensive amount of dirt and material for its upcoming jobs, Bruce Albea purchased a trio of Terex TA40 articulated trucks and a Kobelco SK480 hydraulic excavator. STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) Swedish vehicle maker Volvo said July 24 that second-quarter netprofit jumped 59 percent thanks mainly to cost savings and strong sales of new trucks and construction vehicles. But the company was cautious about the outlook for the rest of 2003. The earnings announcement excluded the Volvo’s car division, which was sold to the U.S.-based Ford Motor Co. in 1999. The Goteborg-based company posted a net profit of 1.72 billion kronor (US$210 million) for the three months ending June 30, compared with a profit of 1.08 billion kronor for the same period last year.  Click for more...

Cat Agrees to Acquire Terex Mining Truck Business →

Caterpillar Inc. and Terex Corporation announced that they have reached a non-binding agreement in principle for Caterpillar to acquire Terex’s worldwide electric drive mining truck business, and for Terex to acquire Caterpillar’s 5000-Series mining shovel intellectual property. Their respective Boards of Directors have authorized commencement of due diligence and the negotiation of a definitive agreement.
