Truckers Want Study of Conn.’s Highway Treatments →

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) The chemical mixture used to clear Connecticut’s highways may have done a good job eating through this winter’s heaps of ice and snow, but truckers believe it also could be eating through the undercarriage of their rigs. The Motor Transport Association of Connecticut wants the Department of Transportation commissioner to study the corrosive effects of the chemical road treatments on state, local and private vehicles, as well as on roads, bridges and the environment.  Click for more...


NTEA’s 47th Annual Convention, Work Truck Show Draws Crowds →

The 47th Annual National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Convention in conjunction with the Work Truck Show was held March 8 to 10 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Billed as North America’s largest work truck show, the event drew more than 10,000 attendees, spanned 500,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space and featured more than 500 exhibitors. Kenworth W900S Mixers, T800 Dump Trucks Added to Fleet →

When three subsidiaries (Century Concrete, Fordyce Concrete and Material Transport) of the largest American-owned cement manufacturer in the country were looking to purchase dependable and reliable trucks several years ago, the choice was Kenworth W900S mixers and Kenworth T800 dump trucks. They haven’t looked back and now operate more than 60 Kenworth trucks. The decision to go with the Kenworth W900S for its mixer fleet and the Kenworth T800 for its tractor and dump fleet has been a good one, according to Rob Tucker, general manager of Century Concrete, Fordyce Concrete and Material Transport, all subsidiaries of Ash Grove Cement.  Click for more...


Truck Maker Volvo Posts Q4 Profit →

STOCKHOLM (AP) Swedish truck maker AB Volvo on Feb 4 posted a profit for the fourth quarter, bouncing back due to a jump in sales on all its markets as well as success in keeping costs down. Still, the earnings missed analyst expectations somewhat, mainly on the back of higher raw material prices and unfavorable exchange rates. CEO Leif Johansson, who is leaving his post in the second half of the year, said his company had ended 2010 strongly, attributing the success to increased sales and “a conscious effort to maintain our costs on a low level.” Johansson said Volvo is seeing a continued gradual improvement in Europe as well as a healthy recovery in North America.  Click for more...

Truck Maker Volvo Returns to Profit in Q3 →

STOCKHOLM (AP) Swedish truck maker AB Volvo said Oct. 22 it returned to a profit in the third quarter, helped by strong demand in Brazil, India, China and Russia as well as a rebound in its mature markets. The Goteborg-headquartered group reported a net profit of $421 million in the quarter, in contrast with last year’s loss. Revenues soared 32 percent. Volvo said almost half of its total sales came from outside its traditional markets, including Brazil, India, China and Russia, but that both North America and the European truck market were performing well, too.  Click for more...

Peterson’s BT40 Blower Truck a Hit With Varsity →

In February, Cleveland Brothers delivered a Peterson BT40 blower truck to erosion control specialists Varsity Inc. of Swoyersville, Luzerne County, Pa. The truck is the first of its kind sold in northeast Pennsylvania. Mack Trucks Increases Employment at Macungie Location →

Mack Trucks will be increasing employment by approximately 125 people at its Macungie assembly operations beginning the first week of October. “At this point, it is anticipated that in addition to recalling folks currently on layoff, we will need to hire new employees as well,” said John Walsh, director of media relations, Mack Trucks. CSA 2010 Increases Importance of Truck Maintenance →

This fall, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will implement the Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010) program, which includes more stringent penalties for violations. This program will make truck maintenance even more important, according to Dick Von Lehman, Kenworth PremierCare national sales manager of service. “Under CSA 2010, truck drivers will now receive points on their record for such things as leaky wheel seals or other minor defects,” Von Lehman noted.  Click for more...


Coal Trucks Get Smoother Ride in Emery County, Utah →

The majestic mountain views of SR 10 may once again be enjoyed by travelers who no longer have to worry about keeping their eyes glued to the precarious roadway. A new 3-mi. (4.8 km) stretch of SR 10 is now open to car and truck traffic between Emery and Muddy Creek in Emery County, Utah. Mack Trucks Calls Back 75 Laid-Off Workers →

ALLENTOWN, Pa (AP) Mack Trucks is recalling 75 laid-off workers to its Lehigh Valley manufacturing plant. The truck maker said it’s benefiting from improving demand for highway vehicles. Company spokesman John Walsh said the recall is effective June 21. It will bring the number of workers at the plant to 750. Working in collaboration with John Deere engineering, these systems were designed to meet Deere’s standards for location, mounting and protection. New York State Backs Down on Rural Large Truck Limits →

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Members of a task force charged with overseeing implementation of new trucking rules said the state Department of Transportation has scrapped a proposal to ban large trucks from seven state highways in the Finger Lakes. The New York Farm Bureau said it’s pleased the DOT reconsidered. Acting DOT Commissioner Stanley Gee announced the decision April 12 to Gov. David Paterson’s Trucking Industry and Community Relations Task Force, saying the proposal would have simply rerouted trucks through neighboring communities.  Click for more...

TURIN, Italy (AP) Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne announced April 21 that the company will spin off its businesses in farm and construction equipment as well as heavy trucks in order to “give birth” to a global auto company that could feasibly build 6 million cars by 2014. “We believe right now is the time to produce the spin off,” Marchionne told analysts after presenting Fiat’s five year business plan.  Click for more...
