A $3.8-million sports practice facility under construction at Mississippi State University (MSU) in Starkville, will bear the name of one of its former students, Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro. Palmeiro played on MSU’s baseball team through his junior season, when he left college to enter the Major League Baseball draft. The 8-acre sports complex will be at the center of the redeveloped Villages at Carver community near the Braves’ home, Turner Field. It includes four fields, two pavilions, batting cages and a playground. Completion is expected in April 2006. The reconstruction of a portion of Interstate 84 (I-84), which is nearing completion, required an array of heavy construction equipment to meet project challenges and normal project needs. According to Rick Negro, the project manager of Plainville, CT-based Manafort Brothers Inc., the project’s general contractor, the project, which began May 21, 2003, included the reconstruction of 3 mi. From Construction Equipment Guide... A Dec. 15 rock and mud slide damaged a portion of a North Carolina roadway known for its scenic vistas. Debris toppled onto the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 401, which is mid-way between the French Broad River and Mt. Pisgah in Buncombe County, NC. According to Jeff Bradley, project manager of Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. Inc., in Asheville, NC, repair work began in early February. Taylor & Murphy is the general contractor that will handle all of the repair work with the exception of the paving, which will be subcontracted to APAC-Atlantic’s Asheville division.  Click for more...

From Construction Equipment Guide... A massive sinkhole could delay a roadway extension project — and tack a lot more money onto the price tag — for the Tallahassee, FL, Department of Public Works. Surveyors happened upon the sinkhole while staking out the area for the .7-mi. roadway extension in mid-October. What was then a 5-ft.
