With original construction more than 100 years ago, the Panama Canal, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through Central America, has had numerous upgrades through the years. Recently, a massive 10-year project to construct a third set of locks and increase the capacity of the canal was completed by Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), an international consortium of industrial contractors. The JCB Hydradig 110W wheeled excavator and tool carrier is powered by the latest Tier IV Final-compliant JCB EcoMAX diesel engine, requires no diesel particulate filter (DPF) or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and generates 108 hp (81 kW). The engine is side-mounted, placing the center of gravity up to 5 ft. (1.5 m) lower than other machines in its class.
